WILDERNESS GETAWAYS
The wilderness areas of the west coast are easily accessible from Port Alberni.
The popular Pacific Rim National Park offers hiking and beachcombing opportunities to people of all capabilities. The park includes the challenging 77 Km (48 mile) West Coast Trail which is recognized as a supreme test of endurance by hikers world-wide. This trail takes at least five days to complete and a quota system is strictly enforced.
While the park has always been a popular summer destination, the winter season provides an unparalleled display of natural fury as storms roll in from the Pacific. The park's vantage points allow visitors to watch these exhibitions in comfort, relaxation and safety. [See "More Tourist Links" below]
For the more adventurous, and accessible from Alberni Valley's Great Central Lake area, an overnight hike will take you to the breathtaking view of Della Falls, the continent's tallest waterfall (444 m or 1,443 ft.). The falls are located in Strathcona Provincial Park, the province's oldest park, which also boasts six of the seven highest peaks on the island, the Comox Glacier, over 100 km of hiking trails and challenging climbing and skiing opportunities.
Carmanah Provincial Park offers hikes to the world's largest spruce trees.
WHALES
During the months of March through May and even throughout the summer and early fall, the west coast of Vancouver Island is the best place in the world to watch the annual migration of the Gray Whale from California up to Alaska. The whales often come close to shore and even into the coves and inlets. Several charter companies show visitors the unforgettable sight of a whale from up close. [See "More Tourist Links" below]
KAYAKING & CANOEING
The calmer areas of the west coast amongst the Broken Group Islands attract kayakers and canoeists of all levels. Several local companies provide tours, lessons and packages, and the MV Lady Rose provides transportation to various points along the Alberni Inlet, the coast and Broken Group Islands. DIVING
The waters of Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands support a diverse variety of marine life. In addition, this coast known as "The Graveyard of the Pacific" is very popular with shipwreck explorers. Charter companies operate out of Port Alberni and the surrounding communities. SALMON FISHING
Fishing is a year round sport in Port Alberni. The Alberni Inlet provides some of the finest salmon fishing in the world. Further west, great fishing abounds from Meares Island and Clayoquot Sound through Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands to Amphitrite Point and Cape Beale. STEELHEAD FISHING
