At the head of Alberni Inlet, a deep fjord coming in from the Pacific Ocean to the west, and in the heartland of Vancouver Island’s west coast Pacific Rim region, Port Alberni has the advantage of being no more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) by road from virtually every other community on the island.
We are approximately a 1 ½ hour drive to Ucluelet and Pacific Rim National Park, or a 2 hour drive to Tofino. Bamfield, about a 2 hour drive in the opposite direction, is also accessible via a day trip cruise on the Frances Barkley “packet freighter”.
Port Alberni is a natural choice base from which to explore Vancouver Island’s many attractions, and the obvious choice for experiencing the wilderness and adventures of the west coast.
The Somass Motel is bounded by Highway 4 and the Somass River on 1 side, hobby farm property at the rear and residential areas on either side. In the early Spring, January – March, we love to watch the swans along the river across the street. This past year we counted up to 22 swans at one time. In the fall it is always quite a scene as flocks of geese arise from their beds in the Ducks Unlimited, Somass Estuary and fly to their feeding grounds somewhere behind our property. The evening sees them flying their reverse twilight route.
Clutesi Haven Marina is about 1 ½ blocks from our motel, walking distance from where most of the Fishing Guides and Charters depart. They have a 4 lane loading ramp and moorage may be available on an ad hock basis. Let us know if you need moorage reserved and we will do our best. Gone Fishin’ the supply store is about 3 blocks away.
We are on the edge of Port Alberni, away from the busy downtown core but within walking distance of several good restaurants and a full service grocery store.
Our quiet Port Alberni location is the perfect place to relax after enjoying the day’s exploration of our area’s many attractions and adventures.
"Where does the name Somass come from?" many people ask.
"Tsoo-mah-ahs" (Somass) is a Nuu-chah-nulth name which means "Waters (river of many tributaries) washing the earth".
The Somass River, a major thoroughfare through the city of Port Alberni into which almost all Alberni Valley rivers and creeks flow, originates at the confluence of the Stamp and Sproat Rivers and flows generally southeast and south into Alberni Inlet. The Somass River leads to major salmon spawning areas in Sproat Lake, Great Central Lake and the Ash River, and crosses Highway 4 just outside of Port Alberni.
